2026 Lobster Farming Chronicle: From Novice to Easy Lobster Harvest - A Practical Guide

Hello everyone, today we're not going to talk about cutting-edge technology or workplace anxiety. Instead, I'd like to share my experience raising crayfish over the past six months. As a complete novice with no prior experience in aquaculture and no professional training, I've managed to raise plump crayfish through trial and error. I've not only achieved "crayfish freedom" but also earned my tuition fees with zero expense.
Like many others, I've seen countless videos in recent years showing people getting rich by raising crayfish, and it's made me quite envious. I've heard that crayfish are hard-to-grow, inexpensive to raise, and the crayfish market is still growing in 2026. Whether for personal consumption or small-scale farming for profit, this has already happened. But I'm also afraid of being a novice, lacking the skills, and losing money by raising them to death; I'm also afraid of being fooled by online "high-yield traps" and paying an "intelligence tax."
Today, based on my personal reading experience, I'll share some insights about crayfish farming in 2026—basic knowledge for beginners: Is it worthwhile? What do you need? What are some common pitfalls? This is all practical information, no gimmicks. Whether you want to raise crayfish on a small scale at home for fun or start a small business to increase your income, you can get started right after reading this.

I. Getting Started: Focus on Fundamental Logic First, Avoid Blindly Following Trends

Like many beginners, I impulsively decided to raise crayfish and almost spent a lot of money on so-called "high-yield new varieties." Fortunately, after researching, I learned that the claims of "7,000 catties per catty and half a catty per crayfish" online were just hype and completely unrealistic. The crayfish we usually raise, scientifically known as Procambarus clarkii, are the freshwater crayfish we commonly eat. The largest individuals are over 1 tael (50 grams) and cost 2 yuan. A beginner who can achieve a yield of 200-400 kilograms per mu (667 square meters) is already considered very successful.
For ordinary people, the main advantage of raising crayfish is that they are "easy to raise": they are adaptable, have few diseases, and can be raised in reservoirs, rice paddies, and even small ponds; moreover, they have a varied diet, so it is not necessary to buy high-end feed, which keeps costs relatively low, and they grow quickly, generally reaching marketable size in 3-4 months, making them well worth trying for beginners.
Beginners should start small, such as with a small, unused reservoir at home or a paddy field. Don't rush into something "large and comprehensive." Practice and accumulate experience first to avoid large-scale investment at the beginning and feeling bad about losses. I started with an unused reservoir at home, about 3 acres in size, and through trial and error, I managed to successfully harvest shrimp on my first try.

II. Practical Tips: From Beginner to Shrimp Farming, Avoid Every Pitfall

Many beginners fail at crayfish farming not because crayfish are difficult to raise, but because they haven't laid a solid foundation and lack practical experience. Based on my reading experience and professional knowledge from reference materials, I've compiled a beginner-friendly operating procedure that's simple, easy to remember, and will help you avoid many pitfalls.

1. Items in the breeding area: Do these 3 things well, and your lobsters will not escape or get sick.

Lobsters have a habit of burrowing, so the core of the habitat should be "escape prevention + suitable resting place". During floods, after successfully storing water, a 50-centimeter-high escape prevention wall should be built around the area. Bamboo strips or netting are both acceptable. The inner wall should be smooth to prevent the lobsters from climbing out. I didn't build an escape prevention wall at first, and half of the lobster larvae I just released escaped, which was a huge loss.
Secondly, resting areas should be provided in the reservoir, such as with tiled fences, old tires, and netting. Water hyacinths, water peanuts, and water chestnuts can also be cultivated in the reservoir, covering about one-third of the water surface. These plants can provide shade and shelter for the lobsters, and also promote the growth of plankton that the lobsters love to eat—a double benefit—and reduce the likelihood of the lobsters burrowing.
Finally, disinfection is essential before releasing shrimp larvae. For newly built ponds, quicklime can be used to clean the pond along with the water, using 100 kg per acre. If it is an old pond, it should be dredged and exposed to the sun first, then disinfected with quicklime, using 50 kg per acre. At the same time, it is necessary to thoroughly eliminate predators such as catfish, snakehead fish, water snakes, and rats from the pond to prevent them from harming the shrimp larvae.

2. Shrimp larvae selection and stocking: Choosing the right larvae is half the battle won.

For shrimp fry beginners, the key is to ensure high survival rates. Never buy cheap, substandard fry. Purchase locally whenever possible, choosing fry that are uniform in size, vigorous, and have well-developed shells to avoid mortality during long-distance transport. I bought mine from the local seafood market; the fry were 3-5 cm long, and I stocked about 4000-6000 fry per acre, keeping them as uniform as possible to ensure consistent growth later on.
The timing of stocking is also important; it's best to do it on a sunny day or at dusk, avoiding the midday heat to prevent the shrimp larvae from suffering heatstroke. Before stocking, place the shrimp larvae in shallow water near the edge of the reservoir to allow them to acclimatize to the water temperature before gradually releasing them into the main pond. Additionally, you can add about 300-400 silver carp (around 50 grams each) to the reservoir; this will help regulate the water level and provide some extra income.

3. Daily feeding and quality management: worry-free and efficient

Lobsters are omnivorous, so you don't need to buy expensive feed specifically for them. However, daily feeding is very easy. For the first 3 days after stocking, feed them small fish and meat scraps. From 3 days to 1 month later, feed them small fish and meat scraps, and you may need to supplement with other feeds. When the lobsters grow to 6-7 cm, you can feed them crushed snails and clams, along with some wheat, bran, corn, and other plant-based feeds. The cost is very low.
When feeding, pay attention to "small amounts, frequent feedings." Feed twice a day, less in the morning and more in the evening, with the evening feeding accounting for 70%-80% of the total daily feeding, as crayfish are nocturnal and have the highest humidity at dusk. The amount of feed should be such that the crayfish "eat until they are full, finish eating, and leave no leftovers." Otherwise, leftovers will contaminate the nutrients and lead to malnutrition. When I first started feeding too much, the water became cloudy, and the crayfish started surfacing. Later, I reduced the amount of feed and changed the water regularly, and things gradually improved.
Water quality management is also crucial. Lobsters grow quickly and consume a lot of oxygen, so the water must be kept fresh. Add 15-20 cm of water weekly, maintaining a water depth of 50-80 cm and a transparency of 30-40 cm. In hot weather, slowly deepen the water to stabilize the temperature. Regularly disinfect with quicklime to regulate blood sugar and prevent harmful substances. During hot, humid days or prolonged cloudy periods, close observation is essential. If lobsters are found swimming to the shore and surfacing, it indicates oxygen deficiency; immediately add water or turn on an aerator.

4. Disease prevention and control: Harvest large plants and leave small ones to continue generating income.

For beginners, the key is to frequently patrol the pond, carefully observe the crayfish's feeding, activity, and molting, promptly remove algae from the pond, and check the filters at the inlet and outlet to prevent crayfish from escaping or predators from entering. Before releasing crayfish larvae into the pond, it's best to disinfect their bodies to prevent the introduction of harmful substances; additional vitamins can be added to their feed to enhance their vitamin intake.
Catching them is also quite simple. Generally, after about two months of rearing, when the crayfish reach a weight of over 50 grams, they are ready to be sold. Crayfish traps or ground traps are sufficient. The "catch the big ones, leave the small ones" method is used, allowing for immediate sales while the remaining crayfish continue to grow and be harvested again. The first time I caught them, each acre produced about 300 jin (150 kg) of crayfish, which sold for about 2500 yuan. After deducting costs, I made a profit of over 1000 yuan. Although the net profit was small, for a beginner, it was a significant achievement.

III. Three pitfalls beginners must avoid: Don't fall for scams!

Based on my own mistakes and the experiences of friends who raise livestock, I've summarized three common mistakes beginners make. We must be careful, or we can easily lose money.
The first pitfall: blindly trusting "high-yield traps." Many people online promote "new varieties of crayfish, yielding tens of thousands of kilograms per mu" and "no need to apply, easy riches," which are all scams. Crayfish production has an upper limit. For beginners raising crayfish on a small scale, a yield of 200-400 kilograms per mu is normal. Those exaggerated claims are either selling defective or substandard crayfish or scamming people out of training fees. Don't believe them.
The second pitfall: Pay attention to novice lobster escape and predators. Many people believe that "lobsters can't escape," so they don't build escape barriers, or they neglect them afterward, resulting in very few lobsters escaping. Others don't remove pests from the pond, allowing snakehead fish and water snakes to eat the lobster larvae, ultimately leading to a wasted effort. This is a simple point, but it's the easiest for beginners to overlook, so it's crucial to do it properly.
The third pitfall: overfeeding or water quality deterioration. Beginners are always afraid the crayfish aren't getting enough to eat, so they overfeed them, resulting in severe pollution from uneaten food, leading to oxygen deprivation and disease. Others don't change the water for extended periods, causing it to smell bad and resulting in many crayfish deaths. Remember, feeding "small amounts frequently" regularly, and changing and disinfecting the water are essential for the healthy growth of crayfish.

IV. Conclusion: In crayfish farming, being grounded and practical is more important than following trends.

In 2026, crayfish farming is indeed a good way for ordinary people to increase their income—the market demand is high, savings are low, and the initial investment is not high. Whether it's small-scale farming for profit or raising crayfish at home for personal consumption, it's a scarce resource. However, it's not a business that "makes money on the spot." It requires time and effort, and it requires gradual exploration and learning; one cannot rush into it.
From a complete novice who couldn't even distinguish between lobster larvae and fish fry, I can now easily raise lobsters. I've experienced the challenges of raising lobsters and accumulated many useful tips. Actually, raising lobsters isn't that difficult. As long as you have a good site, choose the right larvae, and manage the business carefully, even beginners can succeed.
If you'd like to try raising lobsters, you don't have to be a complete beginner. Start with a small area and a few larvae, gradually explore, and I believe you too can achieve "lobster freedom" and perhaps even earn some extra income. I'll continue to share my daily lobster-raising experience. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below, and we can discuss and avoid common pitfalls together!
